How do I fight a surprise medical bill?
Negotiate the bill.
There are a few ways to do this if you're stuck with an unexpected out-of-network bill. First, call the insurer and ask whether it will consider a one-time exception and agree to cover the bill at the in-network rate. If that doesn't work, you can file an appeal.

Whether by accident or intentionally, medical billing and coding errors are common reasons that claims are rejected or denied. Information may be incorrect, incomplete or missing. You will need to check your billing statement and EOB very carefully.

What if I can't afford my medical bills?
If you can't afford to pay even a percentage of your full bill immediately, try asking for a 25% discount if you make a large down payment now. A less aggressive strategy is to ask if the provider will charge you a discounted fee.

Do hospitals write off unpaid medical bills?

Many factors go into how and if, a hospital writes off an individual's bill. Most hospitals categorize unpaid bills into two categories. Charity care is when hospitals write off bills for patients who cannot afford to pay. When patients who are expected to pay do not, their debts are known as bad debt. Amedical provider may choose to continue collection efforts through a third party.

Why Would You Need an EBO?
Hospitals and other healthcare providers face unique challenges today. Reimbursement has become more complex than ever. Continually changing regulatory requirements have increased the administrative burden on both providers and facilities.
Every year, healthcare providers lose a percentage of their net income because of system/software limitations, competing priorities and limited staff. An effective EBO team can provide customized collection solutions while also developing processes that will help meet your business goals. An EBO offers best practices in all areas of the revenue cycle -- from ongoing billing and collection to denied-claim resolution.
In other words, EBOs bridge the gap between healthcare practices and business office management.
Menu of EBO Services
EBO services typically include the following:
Patient Communication
Imaging your business office never taking an incoming patient call again. Imagine happy satisfied patients who get their answers the first time they speak with an agent. Verifying insurance, enrolling patients in managed care programs, offering pre-service financial counseling, preparing and issuing patient statements. EBOs relieve the provider’s office of these responsibilities, freeing up their staff for more crucial tasks.
Insurance
How many billing opportunities are you missing out on? Determining the extent of a patient’s benefits, recovering insurance balances (including government, charity processing and workers’ comp reimbursement), resolving denied claims, monitoring payments, executing appeals and claim rebilling. Effective EBOs will tailor these services for specific account aging and balance ranges.
Self-Pay Accounts
Resolving private-payer accounts, monitoring bill repayment plans, motivating patients to stay current, alerting patients when a payment is due via calls and/or letters. Effective EBOs will represent their provider-clients in a way that’s both compassionate and professional in all communications with the patients.
